Module 1: About the Course

Welcome to Physics 12!

In this course you will cover 5 units: dynamics; energy and momentum; gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields; the wave nature of light; and revolutions in modern physics which includes special relativity and quantum mechanics.

Each lesson will contain required text reading from Nelson Physics 12 as well as suggested questions to check your understanding and where applicable links to relevant videos, and sites on-line.

It is strongly recommended that you do the units in order.

Before getting started with the actual physics, you should become familiar with the course expectations and the tools we will be using. This module will address course organization elements and introduce you into using google drive.

I look forward to facilitating your journey into this course and help you achieve your goals!

Expectations

By the end of this module 1, you will be able to:
  • Identify course organization elements (e.g., course outline, deadlines, participation, assessment)
  • Investigate ways that the course material will be made available
  • Demonstrate that you can navigate online tools (e.g., using google drive for submitting assignments)
  • Use appropriate terminology related to e-Learning
  • Assess digital literacy and academic integrity, and the impact it has on your learning

Long Range Plan

Please note that in the following long range plan, it is just that, a plan. Since you have one year to complete the course you can move at your own pace throughout the course, and may wish to spend more time on the lesson than it is minimally suggested.

Evaluation Scheme

Further information regarding the independent study project (ISP) and the exam are provided on the next headings. In terms of assignments, quizzes, and unit assessments those will be provided as you proceed with the course.

Independent Study Project (ISP)

You may start on your project as early as you like, just be sure not to leave it till the very end.
For further information please click on the button below:

Final Examination

You will be provided with a formula sheet (which is located in one of the headings below) at the final exam and may use it throughout the course while studying and assessments. I recommend that you download it and print it for your reference.

Please download the attached files found in the final exam page as you are getting near the end of this course.

Blyth Academy Online requires that you make arrangements to have a proctor to supervise you while you write the exam.

Please note: you must submit a copy of the completed proctor application form to Mr. Strutt (exams@blythacademyonline.com) at least 10 working days prior to the exam date.  All course work must be completed before you apply to write the final exam.

Rubric

For an understanding of what will be expected from you in each achievement category, take a look at the achievement chart below, which we will be using throughout the course:

Formula Sheet

This will be the formula sheet provided for you during the exam. You will also use it for all the assessments throughout this course, it is to your advantage to download it, and refer to it while problem solving.

Task:

  1. If you don't already have a gmail account, create a new account: mail.google.com/
  2. One of the apps from google is Google Drive, in it create a folder with the title: "SPH4U followed by Your First and Last name "
  3. My e-mail for inviting me into the shared folder is fernando.b.morales@gmail.com, make sure you include me as an editor.
  4. Download the course documents: course outline, long range plan, evaluation scheme, rubric and formula sheet and store them inside the newly created folder.
If you need some additional assistance on setting up shared folders in Google Drive watch the video on the left.

Reflect:

After having reviewed the documents in this module, and finishing up your task. Be sure to create and write on a journal questions/concerns/anxieties/suggestions that you may keep to yourself and/or want to share with me.
